• A truck driver is claiming that he was sacked for being a member of a truckers club which his boss says is a political organisation.

Norfolk driver Kelvin Jones lost his job after attending an East Coast Truckers Club outing for handicapped children.

Jones is to take his employer to an industrial tribunal where he will claim unfair dismissal.

He went to the event in his own time, in a truck he borrowed from another haulier, but still upset boss Haydn Wells.

Wells took exception to the Norwich-Yarmouth trip because it is organised by the East Coast Truckers Club.

He disapproves of its campaign to improve drivers' work ing conditions and regards it as a political organisation.

Jones, who has already been offered some work, is still looking for a full-time job, says: "He just told me that if I attended this event 1 needn't bother coming back to work. A solicitor has told me I have a very strong case for unfair dismissal."

Malcolm Savoury, the solicitor acting for Wells, said that any legal action by Jones would be defended.

He adds: "Mr Wells does not accept he sacked Mr Jones. He is also very upset at the idea that he is against a charity event which he has supported many times in the past. His disagreement with the East Coast Truckers is based on something else entirely."
