A FIRM of builders' merchants was last week in Leeds granted entry into the haulage industry by Yorkshire LA, Mr. H. E. Robson. He sanctioned three B-licensed tippers to carry building materials within a 30-mile radius.

Nordan (Builders' Merchants) Ltd., of Castleford, had two short-term B licences to carry for three named firms with whom, as builders' merchants, it shared common customers.

For Nordan, Mr. A. J. Healey said it had five vehicles under C licence. It wished to carry bricks for Hartleys (Castleford) Ltd., limestone for Womersley Graded Stone Co. Ltd., and building materials for Squire W. Swift Ltd., into Drax Power Station.

Mr. B. Nordan, managing director, said that many times he had been asked by builders to remove debris or transport materials to other sites. He wanted to offer this service as it was difficult to get haulage for just two or three hours. He submitted letters in support.

Mr. J. Hughes, for objectors Joseph Hughes and Sons Ltd., Castleford, asked Mr. Nordan if he had been prosecuted for carrying bricks for hire or reward under a C licence. Mr. Healey confirmed that Nordan had been fined 10 on May 24. The shortterm licence had run since May 2.

In support of the application, Mr. F. Hartley, of Hartleys (Castleford) Ltd., said it had difficulties in obtaining tipper transport. After repeated requests to Hughes, his firm had ceased trying there. Nordan vehicles were in good condition, helped to maintain a good image for his company, and the firm gave satisfactory service.

Mr. Hughes denied that his firm had refused Hartley. A company Joseph Hughes bought last year had worked for Hartley for 26 years and had had a vehicle under contract to it which had recently been surrendered for a B licence. They were licensed to carry this traffic over 120 miles, said Mr. Hughes. He was unable to submit a schedule of vehicle availability but said his firm had recently handed in a B licence.

Mr. B. J. Slater, of Womersley Graded Stone, said Hughes had been unable to supply tippers when required. Its service had been satisfactory but not entirely reliable. Mr. Hughes said his firm had built up haulage business on the work and support of Womersley and preferred to work for them. Requests had ceased since May when a short-term licence had been granted to Nordan.
