Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NUMBER of new models has I-1 been introduced by Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, 8. In addition. the entire Morris-Commercial goodsvehicle range has been regraded.

Largest of the new models is a 6-tonner available in two wheelbase lengths and powered by a fourcylindered engine. There are also a short and a long 5-tonner and a 4-tanner offered with a similar choice of length. These, like the firstnamed, normally have four-cylindered units installed.

Considerable interest attaches to a new tipper, having as its basis the short 6-ton chassis. It is of 5 cubic yds.. capacity and is equipped with power-hydraulic end-tipping gear. With standard 34 by 7 tyres, this vehicle has an unladen weight of less than 50 cwt. Its price is the attractive figure of •2390 10s.

Outstanding features of this machine include an engine built for long service. To mention but one of the points in its construction and design calculated tq. enhance the characteristic of durability the cylinders are provided with austenitic liners. These are also standardized pn the long-wheelbase chassis on the same pay-load rating.

Particular attention has been paid to affording free entry to and exit from the driver's cab, and to this end obstructions between dashboard and seat have been practically eliminated.

Both the long and the short 6-tonners, which have normal control, may be loaded up to a gross figure of 8 tons 15 cwt. Their chassis prices are, respectively, 2317 and £307. In the same group is the forward-control four-cylinder model, which is now rated as a 6-tonner, has the same gross-weight limit as the others and costs, as a chassis, 2345.

Highest Safe Ratings.

We understand that Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., has, for a considerable time been studying the questions of rating and actual maximum carrying capacity, as related to its range, and, as the outcome of its deliberations and investigations, has arrived at the figures now published. The gross-weight figures, it should be noted, represent what the vehicle actually scales, when complete with load, fuel, equipment, and personnel, and are the highest that the maker has ascertained to be consistent with safety.

In the case of the 5-tonner, the gross-weight limit is 7 tons 15 cwt., and the price of the long chassis is 2278 5s., whilst the short model costs 2262 15s.

Completing the list of entirely new machines are two 4-thrillers, short and long, and costing,. respectively, £250 10s. and 2266. Their grossweight limits have been fixed at 6 tons 6 cwt.

Turning now to the reclassification of the remainder of the range, we find a general simplification, the group now comprising four pairs of fourcylinder machines of 1, 2, 2i and 34 tons capacity respectively.

Each pair comprises a short and a long chassis, and, taking them in order of increasing magnitude, the following are the gross-weight limits (one figure for each pair) and the prices (for the short and long, respectively, in each case) : 3 tons 10 cwt., £186, 2207; 4 tons, 2189 5s., 2210 5s. ; 4i tons, 2216, 2222 10s. ; 5 tons 15 cwt., '2225, 2231 10s.

In addition, six-cylindered engines are offered, in many cases, as alternatives to the standard four-cylindered unit, a small increase in price being, of course, entailed.

All the above cost figures, except that for the 5 cubic-yds. tipper, are for the chassis alone, but all models are available with bodies of almost any type desired. Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., has one of the largest commercial vehicle body building departments in the country, and is particularly well equipped to produce standard bodies or to build to special requirements at low cost..
