RPC deadline rush sees registrations increase

P'•

MONTHLY TRUCK registrations last month reached their highest levels since March 2008 thanks to operators rushing to beat the RPC deadline for Euro-5compliant vehicles.

The 3.5-tonne-plus market stood at 6522 registrations, up 5% on September 2008 — and just 2.5% down on the March 2008 figure of 6,687 Tony Pain, chairman of the CV manufacturers section of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), warns: "This is not a market recovery. Pe peak] is all due to the RPC. This proves that even a relatively small incentive can move people."

The RFC surge highlights both "push back and pull forward': says Pain, with some operators having bought vehicles earlier in the year, but not registering them until September to gain a 59-plate, and others getting their October purchases registered a month earlier. As a consequence of this, Pain expects October to be dire.

All manufacturers enjoyed significant surges in September registrations compared with the previous month: DAF registrations improved almost six-fold; lveco more than doubled; MAN was up by more than 50%; Volvo enjoyed a six-fold increase; Renault improved almost fourfold, as did Mercedes-Benz; and Scania more than doubled.

For the year-to-date, registrations in the 3.5-tonne-plus market stand at 28,834 — a drop of 35%.
