Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Standard features on the Seddon include tinted windows, electric nearside door window, roof hatch, heated rear view mirrors, air suspended driver's seat and an adjustable steering column.

The new thicker and unflitched chassis uses constantdepth side rails and Strato-type cross members. Stronger hanger brackets are used to locate Seddon Atkinson's traditional rear suspension but at the front it uses longer and softer two-leaf parabolic springs to give a frame height of 914mm when laden.

There are two engine options, with both developing 157kW (210hp) at 2,500rpm. The Strato 210.C17 is powered by a 5.9-litre Cummins 6BTAA. It meets the Euro-1 emission standard and churns out a useful 705Nm (5201bft) of torque at 1,50Orpm.

Its Strato 210.P17 stablemate takes its power from a Perkins Phaser 210Ti unit carried over from the old Seddon Atkinson 17-tonner: peak torque in this case is 690Nm (509) at 1,40Orpm.

Eaton supplies both gearbox options. The six-speed 4106 and nine-speed 6109 both come with a single-plate clutch and drive through to a 10.5-tonne Rockwell S153 single reduction drive axle on 11R 22.5 tyres. Its Kirkstall front axle, plated at 7.1 tonnes, is fitted with 295 22.5 tyres.

The Strato 210 comes in four wheelbases ranging from 3.8 to 6.25m and has automatically adjusting Girling Simplex cam brakes. The longest wheelbase model weighs in at less than five tonnes without the body.

Volvo's ELIO tractive unit has been given a face lift. The threepiece steel bumper is replaced by a heavier F12 type single beam design with or without under bumper spoiler. Stiffer cab suspension is claimed to improve lateral location and reduce roll on FL models.

Inside the trim has been toughened with leather sides to the seats and engine cowl. The bunk mattress is almost twice as thick and the cab insulation in the rear and roof panels has been improved.

Volvo now offers a 9.6-litre EDC (Euro-1) engine as an option on the ELIO.

Foden has fitted its first Cummins Euro-1 engine in a 4380 6x2 twin-steer tractive unit and it will be available in all 4000 series models for 1993. It takes the N380 14-litre engine which incorporates the mechanical variable fuel injection system known as Step Timing Control (SIC). The N380 produces 283kW (380hp) at 1,900rpm and 1,729Nm (1,2751bft) of torque at 1,200rpm.

Cummins' new clean burn B210, C240, C275 and N380 engines, redesignated to indicate the engine family and power rating, were shown alongside the first Cummins' lightweight 10-litre in Europe to be equipped with CELECT — the engine maker's own electronically-controlled fuel injection system (CM 24-30 Sept). The L350E also features articulated pistons. The CELECT system regulates fuel and injection timing based on data provided by a number of engine sensors. The revised L350E has a gutsy 1,692Nm (1,2471bft) of torque and becomes available next year — Foden, ERF or Seddon Atkinson could offer it.

Perkins did not have its Euro-1 engines on display, however an ERF demonstrator was shown with the 400Tx coupled to Eaton's SAMT transmission which it intends selling into France and Spain. Gray and Adams showed a refrigerated body on a Mercedes Benz 310D chassis which will freeze down to -20°C and give an estimated payload of 1.5 tonnes. Demand for these lighter vehicles has increased from smaller operators over the past 18 months. The spec includes stainless steel door surrounds and fittings, GRP interior with aluminium kick boards and nonslip floor.

The roof-mounted Carrier Zepher 180 motor is operated via an in-cab digital control panel and can be switched to electronic standby for overnight operation.

Carrier's Maxima diesel or electric motors, profiled for use with maximum length semitrailers will also freeze down to -20°C.

Feldbinder has put about 100 tank units into operation since it entered the UK market in 1989. The FFB silo semitrailer at the show was equipped with a wear-free MAN CG 80 worm drive compressor which runs at 80dB(A) delivering a constant 30psi sufficient to discharge 25 tonnes of cement in 25 minutes.

VBG showed its two-height fifth wheel which solves the trailer compatibility problems facing operators of low-deck tractive units. The air powered VBG fifth wheel provides two coupling heights of 164mm and 335mm above frame height so the unit can couple to either a maxicube or conventional trailer with an imposed king pin load up to 15 tonnes. Cost is about £3,000.

Renault took the opportunity to show its 6x2 Major tractive unit. Although the R series Major is built in France the third axle is installed at Dunstable.

Ratcliff showed its cantilever tail lift which fits a wide range of chassis widths. It can also be supplied with a half-width platform for central or side installation. There are two models with lifting capacities of 500kg and 750kg available and both can be semi or fully automatically controlled.

Prices range from E2,250 to £2,750.

Since Lucas Kienzle decided to market the VDO speed limiter Groeneveld announced at the show that it has taken on the responsibility of marketing its own limiter in the UK.

The unit is fitted as standard equipment on Foden and Seddon Atkinson.
