Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Britain's first truck endurance race was won at the weekend by the driving team of Rod Chapman and Radio 1 disc jockey Mike Smith, driving Chapman's Ford Cargo.

Smith crossed the line almost half a lap ahead of the Mobil West Coast Diesel Volvo White Road Boss, driven by Curt Goransson and Slim Borgudd. Third place in the 40-lap race went to the driving team of George and Les Allen in George Allen's Volvo White Road Boss.

The Big Rig Enduro race, which was very much an experiment, involved changes of drivers for all the trucks roughly half way through the race.

The changeover from Chapman and Smith was the first to take place, on lap 16, after which Smith was rarely under pressure.

This was largely because Goransson and Borgudd elected to drive eachother's trucks for the first half of the race and then swap over on lap 21. Goransson was placed first in Borgudd's truck when the time came for the changeover — but Borgudd was lagging well behind and there was a long delay while Goransson waited for his truck to arrive, allowing Smith to consolidate his lead. Unfortunately the changeover spoiled much of the spectacle of the race by bringing the battle between Chapman and Goransson to a premature end. Even so, the idea of an endurance race for trucks seems vindicated as it provided a more realistic test of driver and trucks.

Some members of the British Truck Racing Association have now proposed a fixed distance race (possibly 100km) with a limit on the amount of fuel that can be used.
