• West Sussex County Council's Transport Management Organisation (TMO) has reduced the council's transport bill by nearly £800,000, since it was set up in 1985. TMO's transport manager John Ashmore says that TMO's 2500,000-per-year saving "is somewhat greater than those recently claimed by fleet management specialists brought in by other councils."
At a time when the Government is introducing legislation compelling councils to put services such as vehicle maintenance out to competitive tender, TMO has already had success in tendering_ Last year it won contracts to service and
repair 80% of all Health Authority ambulances operating in the county, and for 130 health staff vehicles.
This and other business has boasted TMO's workshop business from an annual 2175,000 to £250,000. TMO has also won a 235,000 contract for bulk waste movements and has saved some 2250,000 in improved workshop efficiency, while another £175,000 has been reclaimed by reduced expenditure on hire-in plant and transport.
Among the changes introduced by TMO to its services are late shift working at depots, fixed price servicing and the purchase of used vehicles.
