T Leeds last week a grant of four ri tippers of 201 tons was made to Peter Devine Plant Hire Ltd., Ossett, with conditions of Road and building plant and materials within 100 miles by the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, Maj. F. S. Eastwood. An artic of 111 tons (low-loader) applied for was not granted. Objectors were British Railways, Transport Holding Company (Pickfords), Elliotts Hauliers Ltd., York. and Siddle C. Cook Ltd., although the latter's objection was not pursued.

For the applicant company, Mr. P. D. Thorp said his clients had two businesses —plant hire and public works contracting —with an annual turnover reaching £250,000, and wished to carry excavated materials from sites at which they were working. The low-loader was carrying own plant to sites and requests were made to carry other contractors' plant from there, which would avoid running empty.

Mr. C. F. Ault, traffic operating manager of Pickfords, Leeds, and Mr. R. V. Angel, transport manager of Elliotts, gave evidence in respect of the low-loader and submitted availability schedules. Mr. Ault referred to the types of vehicles available to carry all the equipment that had been mentioned and denied any suggestion that their rates were not competitive. On the question of the applicant's vehicle being available at a few hours' notice, he said that some excavators required the regulation two days' notice being given,
