From the outbreak of war until 1948 he served with the Petroleum Board as manager of the south-west region. In 1950 he moved to head office as assistant general sales manager and in 1952 was appointed co-ordinator of shipping and supplies. When the marine department of Esso was reformed in 1954, Mr. Powell was appointed general manager (marine). He became a director in 1957 and in 1960 was appointed managing director. Mr. F. A. Sadler, transport manager of the Crookes Laboratories of Basingstoke, Hants. was presented with a gold watch last week to mark his retirement after 25 years' service.
