Roundabout drives Yorkshire operator round the bend

A NORTH YORKSHIRE haulier has claimed a local roundabout has caused damage to his vehicles, insisting the road is too narrow for a truck to drive around without mounting the kerb.
Dave Welham, owner of Welbeck Transport, told CM he believes that the road on one of the newly built roundabouts at the A64 Brambling Fields junction in Malton is too narrow.
As a result, trailers have been mounting the kerb, causing damage to tyre sidewalls.
“The damage has been a huge cost to us,” said Welham, whose firm is two miles from the junction. “You can’t get a CV around [it]. It isn’t workable or suitable for use, so we have started going through the town.” Welham told CM that he expressed his concerns to A-one+, the firm that built the roundabout for the Highways Agency (HA). The operator, which specialises in steel transport, is telling LGV drivers to avoid the roundabout and travel through the town of Malton instead.
The HA has launched an investigation into the layout of the roundabout and is undertaking road safety audits to determine whether improvements need to be made.
A spokeswoman for the HA said: “We can confirm that the roundabout has been designed in accordance with current standards, which require it to be of a sufficient size and layout to accommodate LGVs.
“Although we have observed a number of LGVs successfully negotiate the roundabout without mounting the kerb, there is evidence to suggest that a small amount of LGVs have mounted the kerb,” she said.
