• by Toby Clark Two new engines have been added to the Master range, giving it a total of three common-rail diesel options. The 1.9dCi and 2.5dCi join the 2.2dCi (introduced last year) for a range of power ratings from 80 to 113hp. Another change to the range for 2002 is a lighter-coloured interior with some styling changes.

The new 2.5-litre engine should make the Master more competitive with powerful rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and lveco Daily, while the smallest engine looks like a useful option for high-cube/low-weight operators.

ENGINES

The 2.5dCi G9U engine is a development of the 2.2dCi G9T, sharing its 16-valve design with twin lightweight tubular camshafts and roller rockers—clairned to reduce valve-train friction by 50%. The high-pressure (1,350 bar) common-rail injection system uses a Bosch CP3 pump and allows pilot injection, reducing the rate of pressure rise in each cylinder to cut noise. The new engine is capable of producing 11% more torque than the 2.8dTi it replaces, and offers BO% of peak torque from 1,250rpm.

The other new engine option is the 80hp 1.9dCi already seen in the Trafic (which will also get the 2.5dCi option dursors.

The 2.2dCi engine has also had a couple of detail changes: a revised turbocharger alters the torque curve and should give it better response at lower speeds.

According to Renault, the new engines should reduce operating costs; they are all said to be more economical than

their predecesPerhaps surprisingly, Renault has also quoted expected lifetimes for each engine: 250,000km for the 1.9dCi, and 300,000km for the larger models. But the biggest change for operators will be in service intervals: oil changes are needed only every 30,000km or two years.
