• EEC Transport Commissioner Stanley Clinton Davis has turned down the idea of Common Market legislation to control the activities of freight forwarders.

In reply to a question from Irish Euro MP Thomas Raftery, Clinton Davis says the incidence of cases of road hauliers being exploited by freight forwarding agents is rare, and does not justify the establishment of a Community system of regulating access to the profession.

He concedes that new EEC rules allowing road hauliers to operate in another country may well boost the role of agents but adds, "there does not appear to be any great risk that they will abuse their new position". '
