The survey concentrated on the inner London area; the A302 at Westminster bridge, A3211 at Victoria, the A501 at Euston Road, and the A40 Western Avenue. Automatic traffic counters recorded the number of vehicles passing at any given time The traffic levels at these selected sites were generally high in the first half of 1986, indicating an overall growth of about 1.5 per cent on the same period of the previous year.
Traffic levels in London have steadily grown between 1972 and 1985 with a rise of 4.5 per cent.
