Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HOW HEARTILY I must agree with the Hawk in his comments on advertising by the motor industry of late (CM, October 25, p29).

We seem to have become conditioned to accepting advertisements which use up more space knocking the opposition than they do telling us about the vehicle being advertised. Adding humour to the situation, of course, is Volvo trying hard to convince us, or is it perhaps themselves, that they are British?

With most manufacturers sinking to the level of sniping at one another, it really does give the whole of the industry, not to mention the advertising profession, a very poor image.

What a pity then the Hawk missed a flap with his otherwise excellently trimmed wings last week. I refer to his article on the same page British Rail on Wrong Track. Could it be that another transport industry doing an essential job for the nation under extremely difficult conditions is just fair game?
