Ian McDonald has joined tankerfreight as general manager at Widnes after previously Norking for Sutton and Sons (St Helens) Ltd. He takes control of the group's largest depot.

Alan Clegg, formerly traffic manager at Widnes takes on the ob of sales development manager and is now responsible for new business in the West Midlands and South West regions. He joined Tankerfreight from Howitt Bros of Liverpool.

Louis Meulenbergs, a transport consultant (previously a director of Tankerfreight Ltd, a subsidiary of the National Freight Company Ltd) has been appointed sales consultant for the South-East.

Interlink has opened its first office and depot in Northern Ireland, at Larne (CM, last week) and Robin Shanks has been appointed manager. He was previously manager, Northern Ireland, of Ferrymasters Ltd. The new office is based at Castle Park, Coastguard Road, Larne.

National Freight Company chairman, Sir Robert Lawrence, who was knighted in the 1980 honours list, is seen here outside Buckingham Palace last week after his investiture. Sir Robert joined the board of the National Freight Corporation in 1968.

The new chief highway engineer at the Department of Transport is Kanagaretnam Sriskanden who succeeds Ron Bridle. Mr Sriskandan was made head of the bridges engineering design standard division of the Ministry of Transport in 1971 and was promoted to deputy chief highway engineer in 1976. Mr Bridle has been chief highway engineer since 1975 and takes over as the DTp's controller of research and development and director of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.

Obituary

We record with regret the death of Len Trueman at 60. Mr Trueman had been industrial relations director of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive since its formation in 1974 but started his career in the public transport industry at the age of 14 with Manchester Corporation. He retired from SYPTE in April of this year.
