BRITISH RAIL is looking for firm commitment from the Gin ernment on the BR/French Rai ways plan for a single-bore rai only Channel Tunnel.
The Board's member for fir ance, Derek Fowler, told a Haus of Commons select committe that a degree of certainty woul make a difference to the way i which the private sector re garded the BR proposal. BR ha so far received "encourage ment" from the banks wit which it has been in discussio over the financing of the projeci BR told the committee that could not give an exact cost fa the scheme but in December c fast year, the estimated cost wa E800m. It also says that it woul, be unrealistic to expect 100 pe cent risk capital being availabl for the project.
