NAANY years ago the residents of and IVA visitors to Campbeltown, on, the Kintyre peninsula, were served by the Clyde steamers, by a light railway that ran to Machrihanish, and by horsed coaches. Now they rely principally on road transport—the grey and blue vehicles belonging to A. and P. McConnachie, Ltd., a company who' have a long history of service to the district.

Operations commenced in August, 1921, carrying mails and passengers on the then rough road to Tarbert. Today, a fleet of a dozen vehicles is run, this corn

prising seven Leylands, including a Royal Tiger, four Bedfords and a Commer. The largest is a 45-seater Leyland with Duple body. Capacities of othervehicles range from 32 to 40 seats.

A local service, approximately hourly, is run around Campbeltown, and buses depart at frequent intervals for Machrihanish, via Stewarton, Strath, Bruntland and Drumlemble. This is a route on which there is a proportion of school traffic which necessitates duplication at certain hours.

In the summer, special tours carry day excursionists arriving on the steame for a sight of Machrihanish Ba where the famous golf course is situ ated. There are special daily shif workers' buses from Campbeltown 1 the colliery at Drumlemble.

A daily service still runs 1 Tarbert, and on the third Wednesda in the month the people of Campbe town embark on their bargain tri to Glasgow, a 272-mile return jou ney for which the normal fare if. For this amount, folk deriA good value, as by leaving at 6 a.rt and arriving home near midnigh the passengers have 6} hours i Glasgow for shopping, perhaps visitin friends who may be in hospital, or seemn the latest shows.
