THE 41st Scottish Motor Exhibition .opens today at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, and closes on November 16. it is open daily from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., except on Sunday. Lord Tweedsmuir will perform the official opening ceremony at noon today and will be the principal guest at the Scottish Motor Exhibition banquet on Monday.

Prices of admission are as follows:— Wednesday, November 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 10s. 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Z. Saturdays : 10 a.m.— 2 p.m., 5s.; 2 p.m.-9 p.m.; 2s. Other days: 10 a.m.— 5 p.m., 5s.; 5 p.m.-9 p.m., 2s.

SEVERAL new vehicles and chassis components are to be seen at the forty-first Scottish Motor Exhibition which opens at Kelvin Hail, Glasgow, today. As with previous Shows, most of the 52 stands exhibiting commercial vehicles are held by distributors, only

10 being occupied by manufacturers. There are 23 makes at Kelvin Hall this year, compared with 27 in 1955.

Among the new, or comparatively new, vehicles on view are the Albion Caledonian maximum load eightwheeler, a lightweight machine intended for solo work, and the Aberdonian underfloor-engined lightweight passenger chassis suitable for 41-seat bodywork with a kerbside weight of only 5 tons.

Described in The Commercial Motor on October 4, the new Bedford 200-cu. in. oil engine is making its debut in a 3-ton long-wheelbase lorry. It is understood that the Bedford twospeed axle announced at the same time may also be seen in one of the exhibits.

Examples of the latest Thames 1012-cwt. and 15-cwt. models are on view, together with a selection from the Thames Trader range. The forerunner of the new Guy Formidable 14-tongross range is appearing as a prime mover with fifth-wheel coupling and designed to haul a gross train weight of 20 tons. On show as a 7-ton tipper is the latest version of the Otter, the oil-engined Mark M. having modern

The latest Thornycroft Trusty PKPQR6 maximum-load eight-wheeler, a road-test report of which appeared in The Commercial Motor on October 25, is seen in chassis and cab form with a locally built all-steel cab. Two versions of the Trojan Senior models with independent front suspension are present, one a standard 1-ton van and the other a personnel wagon.

Stand 117—A.E.C., Ltd.. Squire Street, Whiteinch, Glasgow.

THREE vehicles shown on the stand of A.C.V. Sales, Ltd., comprise a Regent Mark V double-deck bus with Park Royal body for Aberdeen Corporation. a Mercury Mark TI platform lorry with cab and body built by Park Royal, and a Mammoth Major Mark III six-wheeled dumper having Park Royal cab and Edbro tipping gear and body.

The double-decker is powered by an AV470 six-cylindered direct-injection oil

engine developing 103 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m. Monocontrol transmission is fitted and incorporates a fluid coupling and four-speed direct-acting air-operated epicyclie gearbox. Control is eleetropneumatic, gear selection being effected with a small hand lever and providing two-pedal operation. The worm-drive rear axle has a ratio of 5.2 to 1.

Wheelbase is 16 ft. 4 in. and the 27-ft. by 8-ft. body provides accommodation for 66 passengers-29 in the lower saloon and 37 in the upper saloon. There is a five-passenger bulkhead seat facing rearwards on the lower deck. Based on a robust steel underframe, the body structure is a light-alloy design with flanged tubular extruded light-alloy pillars and internal light-alloy stress panels in both saloons. Blind-riveted exterior panelling is used with Simplastic light-alloy window pans.

Interior trimming is of dark green Dulon on the body sides up to the waist and light green enamelled finish to the top of the windows, with ivory coves and ceiling panels. Seats are trimmed in dark green hide.

Suitable for a gross vehicle weight of 14 tons, the Mercury Mark II platform lorry is powered by a similar oil engine to that used in the bus. As with the bus, C.A.V. fuel-injection and electrical equipment is employed. Included in the

specification are a single-dry-plate clutch and unit-mounted five-speed synchromesh gearbox, air brakes with an enginemounted two-cylindered compressor, and a spiral-bevel rear axle. The body is of light alloy.

EVEN Albions are aSvailable for

inspection on four stands, but the principal vehicle of interest is the new Caledonian eight-wheeler on the Albion stand. A road-test report on this vehicle appears on pages 465 to 468. Also shown on the Albion stand arc an Aberdonian .underfloor-engined lightweight passenger chassis, a Chieftain 61-ton platform lorry and an example of the new Albion six-speed gearbox.

Designed to operate at a gross vehicle weight of 24 tons, the Caledonian appears with a 3,900-gal. treble-compartment mild-steel tank. The chassis is based on accepted Albion practice and has a Leyland 0.600 power unit and gearbox.

Wheelbase is 17 ft. 6 in., giving a body length of 24 ft., whilst the maximum overall dimensions of the complete vehicle are 30 ft. by 7 ft. 6 in. In registration condition the chassis weighs approximately 6 tons 44 cwt., permitting a payload of up to 17 tons.

Similar to that used on Leyland vehicles of comparable capacity, the forward-control cab is of all-metal con: struction with double skin to waist height and insulation in the inter space. Clayton Dewandre-GirIing two-leading shoe brakes are hydraulically operated and air-pressure assisted.

Optional equipment available includes a third differential complete with locking device on the first driving axle and controlled from the cab, power steering, and a side power take-off 124 h.p.).

Introduced last July, the Aberdonian is exhibited in chassis form and has a wheelbase of 16 ft. 4 in. It is 29 ft. long and 8 ft. wide to take a 30-ft. body.

A Leyland 0.350 six-cylindered horizontal oil engine developing 94 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. is fitted and drives the Albion overhead-worm rear axle through a fivespeed gearbox of the same make. Moulded facings are used for the twoleading-shoe brakes, which are operated hydraulically with vacuum assistance__ Millburn Motors, Ltd., are showing an Aberdonian with Plaxton bodywork

designed for Continental touring, and a Reivcr six-wheeled goods chassis powered by the Leyland 0.350 six-cylindered oil engine. This vehicle has a platform body to carry a payload of 10 tons.

A Chieftain chassis with platform body for 7-ton loads may be viewed on the Penman stand, whilst Alexander's have another Aberdonian with an all-metal 4I-seat dual-purpose coach body. This has a front entrance with electrically operated jack-knife doors.

ATK INSON

Stand 109 — John Mitchell of Greenock, Ltd., Gray Place, Greenock. THIS distributor is showing an Atkinson -I Model L.1586 flat platform vehicle. It incorporates a cab of Atkinson manufacture, constructed in glass fibre. There

are two electric wipers for the full-vision windscreen, a cab heater, and drop windows in the doors.

The eight-wheeled chassis is powered by a Gardner 6LW six-cylinder&I directinjection oil engine developing 112 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m. Maximum torque is 358 lb.-ft. at 1,300 r.p.m. The drive to the overhead-worm reduction units of the two rear axles is taken through a 16-in.diameter clutch and five-speed gearbox. A third differential is incorporated.

Wheelbase is 17 ft. 8.1 in., whilst the chassis weight for registration is approximately 6 tons 6 cwt. Built by the exhibitor, the platform body has an ash underframe with hardwood floor. Side raves are reinforced by full-length steel angles.

A RECENT newcomer to the Austin

range is the 2-ton forward-control oil-engined chassis, and two examples can be seen on the stands of Lamb's Garage Ltd., and Cariaw (Cars), Ltd.

Power is supplied by a B.M.C. 3.4-litre four-cylindered oil engine which develops 52 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.p.m. Maximum torque is 130-113.-ft. at 1,500 r.p.m. An 11-in, clutch is used in conjunction with a four-speed constant-mesh gearbox, whilst the spiral-bevel rear axle has a ratio of 4.585 to I.

Wheelbase is 10 ft. 1 in. and the turning circle 43 ft. Two-leading-shoe brakes are fitted, with 12-in, units at each wheel. Tyres are 6.50-16 in., with twins at the rear.

The 2-tonner shown by Lamb's Garage has a body to British Road Services' specification. The body is 11 ft. 104 in. long, 5 ft. 104 in. wide and 6 ft. high at the centre. The other vehicle being shown by this concern is an Austin 4-ton 11-ft. 6-M.-wheelbase forward-control oiler with a light-alloy drop-sided both. It has internal dimensions of 14 ft. 4 in. by 6 ft. 11 in.

Accompanying the 2-ton chassis on the Carlaw stand is a 5-ton long-wheelbase forward-control oil-engined chassis.

Valentine's have a 1-ton pick-up and a 5-ton long-wheelbase forward-control parcels van powered by the B.M.C. 5,1litre oil engine. The van—of 700-cu.-ft. capacity—is for B.R.S. Framed completely in extruded aluminium sections. the body is sectionally jig-built and a replacement for any section may he obtained immediately from the bodybuilders. The number of different sections has been kept to a minimum_ Taggarts' have a 7-ton 13-ft. 4-in.wheelbase forward-control oil-engined platform lorry with a high loading board. and a 152 13-seat Omnicoach.

Moir and Baxter are displaying a 4-ton van with B.M.C. B series 1,489 c.c. foureylindered o.h.v. petrol engine, and a 7-ton long-wheelbase platform lorry.

Two vehicles on Penman's stand are based on the 3-ton forward-control oilengined chassis. One has a Penman I5-ft. wooden platform and four-horse container. The other has a van body of composite construction with wooden framework and aluminium-alloy panels. The standard Austin cab is built into the body and there is a rear roller shutter, A 7-ton short-wheelbase oil-engined tipper powered by the B.M.C. 5.1-litre oil engine is featured by John Mitchell. Made by the exhibitor, the 6-cu.-yd. both has hardwood drop sides and a top hinged tail door. A rolled-steel-joist underfrarne connects with Pilot U.3 hydraulic tipping gear.

THREE recent developments with vehicles of this make have been the introduction of a four-cylindered oil engine, a Vauxhall-built two-speed axle and moulded brake facings on all vehicles except the 10-12 cwt. models.

Essentially a four-eylindered version of the Bedford six-cylindered engine, the new unit is available in Bedford 25-cwt.. 35cwt.. 2-ton and 3-ton chassis, and replaces the Perkins P4 engine. It is about 150 cheaper. Having a capacity of 200 Cu. in. (3.27 litres), the new engine develops 57 b.h.p. (net) at 2,500 r.p.m., whilst the maximum net torque is 139-Lb.-ft at 1,400 r.p.m.

The new axle is available as an optional fitting on all Bedford models of

4-ton capacity and over. except the passenger chassis. It has hypoid-bevel primary gearing and an epiCyclic secondary train. It weighs only 110 lb. more than the standard axle.

First public showing of the new oil engine is in a 3-ton long-wheelbase lorry an the S.M.T. stand, where a Grosvenor conversion on a 10-12-cwt, model, a 7-ton short-wheelbase tipper powered by the Leyland 0.350 oil engine and a BedfordDuple Alpine 36-seat coach are also to be seen. The coach has all the luxury equipment of the current Super Vega. and additional synthetic glass roof with sun blinds. Two heaters and Radiomobile radio and speech amplification apparatus, with speakers under the seats, are fitted.

Scammell have on display an articulated outfit incorporating their automatic coupling gear. The Bedford SA.8 tractor has a Leyland 0.350 Oil engine, whilst the Scammell 11-ton semi-trailer has a Flat platform body .23-ft. long.

Two 10-12-cwt. conversions, a 12-scat Workabus by Martin Walter, and a 12seat Kenex Aristocrat, are being, shown by Mackay and Jardine, together with a 5-ton long-wheelbase normal-control petrol-engined lorry having high front and tailboard, arid a 6-ton normalcontrol oil-engined short-wheelbase 5-cu.yd. end tipper.

A Viandette mobile butchery shop by Smith's Delivery Vehicles, Ltd., on a 10-12-cwt. CAZ chassis; a Dorrnobile caravan by Martin Walter. and a 6-ton 11-ft.wheelbase oil-engined tipper comprise the exhibit of Watson Bros. (Airdrie), Ltd. The tipper has Model 8 Weston single-ram hydraulic tipping gear and stabilizer.

DRIVER comfort has received attention in the latest modifications to Commer models in the over-2-ton range. More space has been afforded by an increase in seat adjustment. whilst forward-control models of 5-ton. 7-ton, 10-11-ton and 12ton capacity have had the steering Column raked 24-* nearer the vertical.

Altogether 12 Commer vehicles are seen on six stands. Melvin Motors, Ltd.. have a 100-cu.-ft. delivery van with a four-cylindered o.h.v. engine, and a Commer-Duple Avenger 41-seat luxury coach. This has a wheelbase of 17 ft. 6 in. and is powered by a Rootes three-cylindered 105 b.h.p. two-stroke oil engine. .A four-speed synchromesh gearbox. two-speed rear axle and airhydraulic brakes are installed. A Tecalernit lubrication system is fitted: Cam posite framed, with Perspex canopy and roof lights, the body has toughened safety glass throughout. a large rear baggage locker, FormicaRockite plastics finishers, special seat mountings and flashing direction indicators. Two recirculatory heaters and Smiths Radiomobile radio and speech amplification are also provided.

A Cob 7-cwt, van and a 7-ton forwardcontrol platform lorry powered by the Rootes oil engine are displayed on Claud Hamilton's stand. The 7-tonner has a wheelbase of 13 ft. 6 in., whilst the body is 18 ft. long and 7 ft. 6 in. wide.

A Superpoise 12-ft.-wheelbase 5-ton special tipper with Perkins Pb oil engine and a 10-11-lon prime mover with Scammell coupling are on Hamilton Bros.' stand. Powered by the Rootes 105 b.h.p. two-stroke oil engine, the prime mover has a wheelbase of 7 ft. 10 in., and incorporates" air-hydraulic brakes, overdrive and tachometer.

The Scottish Automobile Co.. Ltd., arc. showing a Superpoise 2-3-ton 650-cu.-ft. van powered by a 91 b.h.p. six-cylindered petrol engine, together with a 7-ton forward-control 6-cu.-yd. tipper. Two forward-control drop-sided lorries with Rootes two-stroke oil engine occupy the Ross stand.

Of two vehicles on show, one is 11 CVD 650-30 double-decker with a wheelbase of 18 ft. 6 in. and powered by the Daimler CD.650 10.6-litre direct-injection oil engine. It has hydraulic power-assisted steering fitted as an extra. and ClaytonDewandre Bendix-Westinghouse dual' circuit air-preSsure brakes. Transmission is preselective.

The Alexander all-metal body of light-alloy and steel sections seats 73 passengers. The completely redesigned front-end structure is made of glass fibre This has saved nearly 100 lb. in weight.

The other vehicle is a CVG 6 doubledecker chassis with a wheelbase of 16 ft. 4 in. and powered by a Gardner 8.4-litre direct-injection oil engine. The semi-full front-end structure is of plastics. Preselect ive transmission and Clayton-Dewandre triple-servo vacuum brakes are fitted.

11AIN feature of the A.V.I ambulance al shown by Dennis is the low floor height—I ft. 94 in.—provided by a De Dion-type rear axle mounted on CaryGregoire suspension. The full-forwardcontrol chassis has a wheelbase of 8 ft.

9 in. and is powered by a Perkins P4 (C) four cylindered indirect injection oil engine developing 58.5 b.h.p. at 2.800 r.p.m. Turning circle is 35 ft. Body mounting on Metacones limits the transfer of road vibrations.

Other vehicles on view on the Dennis stand are a Pax 111 type BV6T 7-74-ton, 7-cu.-yd. tipper and a Condor I2-tongross chassis. Powered by a Perkins P6 oil engine, the Pax has a wheelbase of

10 ft. Of in, The body is of welded allsteel construction and is 12 ft. 6 in. long, 7 ft. wide, and 2 ft. 3 in. high. There is a detachable extension 1 ft. high. Edbro-B. and E. twin-ram underbody tipping gear has cab-operated control.

A Dennis 54-litre Mark -II engine supplies power for the Condor chassis and develops 87 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. Transmission is through a 14-in, diameter single dry plate clutch, and a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox to the Eaton twospeed rear axle.

The Central Motor Co. are also showing a forward-control Condor.

DODGE

Stand. 110—Ritchie's; Ltd., 36-44 Renfrew Street, Glasgow.

Stand 125—Dodge Bros. (Britain). Ltd., Kew Gardens, Surrey.

THREE Dodge models shown by Ritchie's, Ltd., comprise a 7-ton 6-cu.-yd. normal-control tipper powered by the Leyland 0.350 oil engine, a P6-engined 6-tonner with 16-ft. dropFl 2

sided body and a 6-ton 5-cu.-yd. tipper also powered by the P6 oil engine. Each has an Eaton two-speed rear axle.

Dodge are displaying a Model 103 BP6 with the Mark He Eaton two-speed axle, and a Model 243AY prime mover. Powered by the Leyland 0.350 engine, the tractor is suitable for an 18-ton gross train weight and has an Eaton 18.500 two-speed axle and air-hydraulic brakes.

THE only two E.R.F. vehicles at Kelvin Hall this year are on James Bowen's stand. Both have Clayton automatic lubricators.

A Model 68G eight-wheeler powered by the Gardner 6LW oil engine has a Dewco 3,600-gal, tank body. A Homalloy platform body 20, ft. long and 6 ft. 11 in. wide is fitted to the other exhibit, a four-wheeled model 44G withthe Gardner 4LW oil engine. The gross weight rating for the 44G is 13 tons.

Stand 118—Fodens., Ltd., Elworth Works, Sandbach. Cheshire.

cHlEF development affecting vehicles in the Foden range has been the introduction of air-pressure brakes, which are now standard on all models, together with a completely independent drum-type transmission hand brake (The Commere.tal Motor, November 1). Three models shown are an FGHT 8/80 tractor with a Gardner eight

cylindered oil engine developing 150 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m., an FG 5/14 standard vehicle with Gardner 5LW engine, and an FED/6 heavy-duty dump truck powered by the Foden Mark II two-stroke six-cylindered oil engine. The dumper has a special half-cab and a standard 9-10-cu.-yd. (15-ton payload) dump body, and in common with the tractor employs a fourspeed gearbox with two-speed auxiliary section.

GUY

Stand 123—Guy Motors, Ltd., Fallings Park, Wolverhampton.

TWO new models are presented. One is the forerunner of the new 14-tongross Formidable range, which appears as a fifth-wheel prime mover for an articulated gross train weight of 20 tons. The other is an Otter Mark III 7-ton tipper embodying detail improvements to the chassis and modernized frontal styling.

The Formidable, described on page 473, has a Meadows 613C 500 six. cylindered oil engine developing 135 b.h.p. It has a capacity of 8.143 litres. and " square " bore and stroke dimensions. Transmission is by a 16-in hydraulically operated clutch, five-speed constant-mesh gearbox and heavy-duty spiral-bevel rear axle with a 6.833 to 1 reduction.

Chassis features of the Otter include a new pressurized cooling system with block-type radiator behind a plastics grille, and improved hydraulic brakes assisted by Hydrovac. A Gardner 4LK 3.8-litre oil engine is used.

Karrier Bantam and Gamecock models appears on six stands. Melvin Motors have a Bantam 2-3-sooner with a 560-cu.-ft. van body and powered by a four-cylindered chromed-bore o.h.v. petrol engine. Wheelbase is 10 ft. 2 in. A 14-ft.-long and 7-ft. 2-in.-wide platform is fitted to the . Gamecock 3-4-tonner shown by Claud Hamilton; it has a Rootes 85 b.h.p. two-stroke oil engine.

A 2-3-ton Bantam mobile grocery shop for inside service, with the entrance on the near side at the rear, is featured by Hamilton Bros. It has awash basin. A GameCock 3-4-tonner carrying a I5-ft. 6-in.-long and 7-ft.-wide platform is shown by the Scottish Automobile Co.

James Ross are showing a 2-3-ton Bantam milk float, T. M. Erskine have three vehicles on view. These comprise two 2-3-ton Bantams, both with petrol engines—one fitted as a mobile grocery shop by Smith's Delivery Vehicles. Ltd., arid the other as a special van—and a Bantam 4-5-ton prime inover with BK-type coupling gear.

ARECENT innovation on Land-Rover models has been the introduction of an optional power unit. This is a Rover 2.052-litre four-cylindered indirect-injection oil engine. It has a maximum net output of 52 b.h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m. and a maximum net torque of 87 lb.-ft, at 2,000-3,000 r.p.m. _

James Gibbon are showing two 88-in.wheelbase models. One is a petrol engined truck with heater and demister, flashing indi cators and towine equipment, the other an oiler with a metal top in place of the hood. A third vehicle displayed by this exhibitor is a 109-in.wheelbase de luxe oil-engincd vehicle witl. an extra rear canvas hood.

An 88-in.-wheelhase petrol-engincci utility, a 109-in.-wheelbase oil-engined de luxe pick-up, and a 107-in.-wheelbase station wagon are shown by Rossleigh. Callandcrs have a 109-in.-wheelbase oilengined model with special upholstery and interior trim.

Leylands, all for Scottish opera tors, are on view. Gibsons have two Comet ECOS2/4R models, one with a waterproof wooden platform body and 20-ft.-long insulated aluminium container, and the other with a normal wooden platform.

A Titan front-entrance 72-seat PD3/2 double-decker with fully automatic Pneumo-Cyelic gearbox, a Worldrnaster double-entrance 40-seat -RT3/1 singledecker for Glasgow Corporation. and a forward-control Comet with 1.500-cu.-ft. Luton body are 'displayed by Leyland.

The double-decker is the first of two 30-ft. buses with "fully automatic gearchange to be built for Edinburgh Corporation, and has a body by Walter Alexander. The spacious entrance has power-operated double jack-knife doors.. The chassis has a wheelbase • of 18 ft. 6 in.. and is powered by a 9.8-litre oil engine developing 125 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m. A saving in weight of 1}-2 cwt.

has been achieved by the use of a glass. fibre front-end sub-structure built b} Holmes (Preston). Ltd.

The single-decker has a 30-ft. by 8-ft. body built in shell form by M.C.W., and finished and furnished by Glasgow Transport Department. Unladen weight of the vehicle, which has a 16-ft. 3-in. wheelbase, is 7 tons 9 cwt.

ACOMPREHENSIVE range of Morris vehicles is displayed by five distributors. Wylie and Lochhead. Ltd.. are showing a 7-ton long-wheelbase dropsided lorry, a. 10-cwt. 3/B-type van adapted for the carriage of fish, and a standard i--ton van. The B.M.C. series-A four-cylindered o.h.v. petrol engine used in this handy vehicle develops 37 b.h.p. at 4,500 r.p.m. Body capacity is 78 cu. ft.

A nick-up version of this chassis, with Lilt, is included inWilliam

exhibits. The company are also showing a 2-3-ton normal-control oil-engined drop-sided truck and a 11.-ton normalcontrol petrol-engined drop-sider.

Another 1.-ton van forms part of MeLay's exhibit of four vehicles. The other vehicles are an LD1. 235-cu.-ft.

1-ton petrel-engined van, a 13-seat minibus withj.1,489 c.c. petrol engine, and a 120-cu.-ft. f-ton van powered by a similar unit. The forward half of this van sterns from the Oxford car. •

A relatively new model is seen in the 2-ton forward-control van ,powered by the B.M.C. 3.4-litre oil engine. It is 17 ft. 5 in. long, 8 ft. 2 in. high and 6 ft. 10 in. wide. Body capacity is 350 cu. ft. Sliding cab doors are fitted. Other Fraser exhibits are a +-ton van, a 12 12-15-cwt. van and a 7-ton short

SEDDON models on view are a Mark 15/4LW 14-ft. 6-in.-wheelbase drop-sided lorry, a Mark 12F/4LW 14-ft. 6-in.-wheelbase platform lorry, and a Mark 559/2 9-ft.-wheelbase prime mover with a Carrimore fifth-wheel coupling. All have forward control. The first two are powered by Gardner 4LW four-cylindered oil engines developing 75 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m., whilst the

F14 theird exhibit has the Perkins P6 oil engine.

A feature of the Mark 15. which has a body 20 ft. long and 7 ft. 6 in. wide, is the well-appointed cab with glass-fibre panels. Payload rating of this model is approximately 74 tons. A body of similar dimensions is fitted to the Mark 12F, and the mechanical specification includes a 13-in, hydraulically operated clutch,. five-speed overdrive gearbox and Eaton two-speed 16,500 rear axle. This model is designed for a gross weight of 12 tons.

The prime mover has a 12-in.diameter single-dry-plate clutch, five-speed constant-mesh gearbox with direct top, and an Eaton twospeed rear axle. ft is intended for a gross train weight of 15 tons. Tyre equipment is 8.25-20 in. (12-ply) with single fronts and twin rears,

THREE types of Standard vehicle are displayed. A 6-cwt. pick-up, 6-cwt. delivery van and 12-cwt, pick-up are seen on both the stand's of fvfacharg, Rennie and Lindsay; and Rossleigh. Cameron. and Campbell, and Callanders each have a 6-cwt. van.

Both the 6-cwt. and I2-cwt. models are derived from private cars. The former is the commercial version of the 10 h.p. car, whilst the 1 2-ewt, has a similar specification to the Vanguard. The smaller vehicle has a 33 b.h.p. engine, four-speed gearbox and hypoid rear axle. Standrive two-pedal control can be provided. Independent suspension of the front wheels is by coil springs and transverse wishbones.

Either a 2-litre petrol engine developing 68 b.h.p. at 4,200 r.p.m. or a 2.1-litre oil engine developing 40 b.h.p. at 3.000 r.p.m. is used in the 12-cwt. chassis. A three-speed gearbox with steeringcolumn change and independent frontwheel suspension are other features,

AA S announced in The Commercial 3. Motor on November 1, Ford have introduced a new range of Thames vehicles in the 10-12-cwt. and 15-cwt. classes. Examples are to be seen on at least three stands. The specification includes full forward contra independent front suspension, 52 b.h.p. fourcylindered petrol engine, three-speed gearbox and spiral-bevel rear axle. Maximum body space in the van version is 180 cu. ft., and the wheelbase is 7 ft.

A 15-cwt. van with side-loading door is being.displayed by George and Jobling in association with Alexanders, of Edinburgh, who have a Thames I4-ft. 9-in. extended-wheelbase 4-ton Luton van powered by the 4D oil engine, and another Trader of 12-ft. 8-in. wheelbase with a 5-ton wooden drop-sided body.

The Paisley Motor Co. are exhibiting a 10-12-cwt. van and a 12-ft, 8-in.-wheelbase Trader 5-tonner with 40 oil engine and wooden drop-sided body.

A 15-cwt. chassis and a Thames 3-ionner fitted with a bread-van body framed in extruded aluminium alloy and panelled in resin-bonded glass-fibre sheet are being shown by Croft. Roof panels are translucent, whilst the side, front and rear panels are pigmented to the finished colour.

M. Inglis are featuring a Trader 7-ton platform truck. A Trader 5-ton 5-cu.-yd. tipper Powered by the Ford 60 oil engine and having Anthony Hoist tipping gear appears on Laidlaw's stand.

Wy lie's are exhibiting a 7-cwt. van and

a Trader 6-cu.-yd. 9-ft.-wheelbase tipper with 6D oil engine.

stand is taken by an example of the latest Trusty maKimum-load eightwheeler. The all-steel cab has been built locally to the reqoirements of the operator. Power is supplied by a 9.83litre oil engine developing 130 b.h.p. at 2,000 r p.m. and having a maximum torque of 430 lb.-ft. at 1.200 r.p.m.

Transmission is through a six-speed gearbox incorporating overdrive, to overhead-worm-driven rear axles equipped with 9.00-20-in. (12-ply) tyres. The chassis shown has four-spring rear suspension, but other rear bogie layouts are available. Power-assisted steering is a standard feature and air-pressure brakes operate on all right wheels. A Swiftsure 6-64-Ion end tipper has a Thorpycroft all-metal cab, Anthony Hoist tipping gear and Coachbuilt body with double drop sides and glass-fibrelined floor. The latest addition to the Swiftsure range is a" 5-tonner with a wheelbase of 17 ft. 6 in., and intended for bodies of 1.600-cu.-ft. capacity or more, an example of which is on view.

THE vehicle shown by Bowen is a I Senior standard-wheelbase I-ton van with Perkins P3/144 oil engine, threespeed synchromesh gearbox and the new Trojan trailing-link independent front suspension. The links work in conjunction with quarter-elliptic leaf springs.

An example of the new semi-forwardcontrol long-wheelbase chassis is seen on Ritehies• stand and has a special body. A loading space 10 ft. 9 in. long is provided behind the driver, body capacity being 350 Cu. ft.

THE only foreign commercial vehicle to be shown is the German-built Volkswagen. Crean and Croall have a pick-up and a van with double doors on both sides, whilst Cameron and Campbell are exhibiting two 15-cwt. delivery vans and a l5-cwt. pick-up.

Chassis design of the Volkswagen cannot be compared with that of any British vehicle, in that it has a fourcylindered horizontally opposed aircooled petrol engine mounted at the rear. The main.loading space is of 141 Cu. ft., with 29 Cu. ft. over the engine bay.
