A N appeal by the Stockland Garage,

Ltd., Erdington. against a decision by the West Midland Traffic Cornmissioners, has been dismissed with costs by the Minister of -Transport. The company contested the inclusion of a new picking-up and setting-down point at Brown's Green. Handsworth Wood, in the modified renewal of an excursion and tour licence granted to the Sandwell Motor Co., Ltd., Great,Barr.

When the appeal was heard in September, Mr. Kenneth Mynett, for Stockland, claimed that Brown's Green was in their catchment area, and the grant would have an adverse effect on their traffic. People, living in the district found little difficulty in travelling by stage services to join Sandiiiell's coaches.

The Commissioners lad ruled that Sandwell could use only one vehicle a day at the Brown's Given point, but later there was bound to be an application for increases. It was really the thin end of the wedge.

Mr. H. G. Walters, for Sandwell, said there had been many complaints from passengers about having to travel to join their coaches. The company merely wanted to -improve existing facilities.

Recommending the Minister to dismiss the appeal, Mr. J. M. Glen, who conducted the inquiry, said it was appropriate for passengers to be picked up and set down as near as possible to their homes, where that could be done without injustice to other operators. The Com-missioners' decision, limited to one vehicle, seemed justified.

UNIFICATION PLAN

1-3, A PLAN to co-ordinate departmental

transport is being considered by Portsmouth City Council. The cleansing and haulage committee would be responsible for purchasing vehicles and be able to achieve a measure of standardization, and would also undertake maintenance work on all haulage and special-type vehicles. At present, the vehicles of the education department are idle for two months a year.
