Rubber Suspension on 13and 15-tonners. Range of Mechanical horse Models for

General and Special Purposes

Stand 29

MACHINES of three distinct classes comprise the exhibit of Scammell Lorries, Ltd. Briefly, it comprises rigid six-wheeler, an articulated eightwheeler and a. group of machines in which the three-wheeler design is incorporated, as the tractive unit, shown in one form or another.

Two years ago the Scammell rigid 12-13-ton six-wheeler created immense interest, .During this period the design has proved highly successful, and no drastic modifications ha \ e been made. Salient points of this chassis are the use of rubber in the rear-bogie suspension system and a six-speed gearbox, in which all wheels are in constant mesh ; needle-roller bearings are extensively used, and there is a pressure oil-circulating system, as used in power. units. Available with either a petrol engine or an oil engine, the machine is seen at-Olympia with the .well-known Scammell 80-b.h.p. four-cylindered petrol unit. The. bore and stroke are 5 ins. and 51 ins, respectively, the overhead valves have renewable seatings in the detachable. aluminium cylinder heads. and the crankcase and sump are now made of Elektron. The alternative power unit is the Gardner sixcylindered 102 b.h.p unit of 4i-in. bore and fein. stroke. As shown, the overall length is 29 ft. 10 ins., t,he wheelbase JO ft. 2 ins., and the available body space 22 ft. The tyres are 13.5-in. by 16-in. low-pressure pneumatics, and the floor height is about 4 ft.

The articulated eight-wheeler has a pay-load capacity of 15 tons, it is powered with the Gardner 6LW

engine, and, like the 12-13-tone model, has, a six-speed gearbox. It affords a -body space 24 ft. 3 ins. long.

Another interesting 'transmission feature common to both models is au epicyclic double-reduction gear incorporated in the final drive, whilst the hollow front-axle should be inspected.

The concern's popular. 6-ton mechanical horse is exhibited. with. two forms of carrier-e-one having a straight frame and one of drop construction. It is powered by a 15 h.p. four-cylindered engine. In the case of the drop-frame trailing unit, a loading height of 2 ft. 4 ins, is afforded. The body space at this level is 15 ft. by 7 ft. 3 ins. In both cases the quick-coupling turntable is employed.

For 3-ton loads the concern is showing smaller vehicles of similar design, with 10 h.p. power unite which develop 20 b.h.p.

The low-loading trailing unit on view has a floor level of 3 ft., whilst the platform area is 15 ft. by -6 ft.

In addition to the general-purpose exhibits, three special machines are shown, one is a 12-cubic-yd. refusecollecting articulated five-wheeler, in which a Scammell moving floor is incorporated. Another is a street-washer, again based on the mechanical horse outfit. The tank is of the Scammell patented lightweight frameless construction, welded uplitind rust-proofed-. It has a capacity of 1,250 gallons, there is equipment for kerbside washing, squeegees are provided, and sprinkling operations can also be performed. Additional equipment includes sewerflushing gear and a reel for 60 ft. of hose, whilst there is an independently driven 120-g. p rn . pump..–Scammell Lorries, Ltd., 9, High Holborn House, 52-54, High Holborn, London, 1,A.T,C,2.
