Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Semi-trailer for Attachment to a Lorry of Conventional Type—the Novel CommerSoubar Outfit

Stand 140

THE Southern North and Barker concern is showing three semitrailers of novel design. The idea is that they can be used with a conventional lorry instead of requiring a tractive unit intended expressly for semi-trailer towing.

Visitors have the opportunity of inspecting a Soubar machine coupled to a Commer forward-control lorry, to which only a small alteration has been made, namely, the shortening of the body to provide space for the connection with the trailing unit.

The Soubar trailer is equipped with a Commer back axle and suspension system, so that these parts are interchangeable with those of the lorry used for towing.

The standard trailer is built to carry 4-5-ton loads and is 12 ft. 6 ins. long, the axle being arranged so that the bulk of the weight is taken by the trailing wheels, but a definite

proportion to ensure stability and adequate adhesion is superimposed upon the driving wheels of the lorry. It is strongly built, designed on sound engineering lines and seems likely to fill a need in operating circles which is not now catered for. To render the trailing unit rnanceuvrable when disconnected from the lorry a mechanically operated lifting gear with jockey wheel is provided.—Southern North and Barker, Ltd., Brighouse, Yorks.
