Stand 32

WIDELY divergent in type are the VI/ two Pagefield machines, one being the Pathfinder forward-control 6-7tonner for trailer work and the other the Prodigy refuse collector. The former has a. Gardner 5LW-type. fivecylindered oil engine of 44-in, bore and 6-in, stroke, developing 86 b.h.p. . The drive is transmitted through a separate gearbox, a 33org and Beck 16-in, single-dry-plate clutch with ballbearing release gear, and a tubular propeller shaft with Hardy-Spicer needle-type joints, to a worm-driven rear axle, which has fully floating shafts.

Mechanically operated servo brakes take effect on all four wheels, the rear shoes being 6 ins, wide and those at the front 3 ins. wide. With a wheelbase of 12 ft. 6 ins., a front track of 6 ft. 3 ins, and a rear track of 5 ft. 10* ins., the chassis is designed to accommodate a platform 16 ft. long

The Prodigy 15-cubic-yd. refuse collector has a sheet-steel body arranged for inside loading over an adjustable harrier. Access to the body is . provided by two detachable folding steps, and the whole of the rear opening is enclosed by means of two vertically hinged doors. The body may be tipped to an angle of 45 degrees by means of hydraulic three-ram gear. The totally enclosed cab accommodates a gang of loaders, in addition to the driver.

The Prodigy has a four-cylindered 23-56 h.p. petrol engine, of 95-mm. bore and 130-mm. stroke, constructed as a unit with the gearbox, the gears being engaged by remote control. The mechanically operated hand brake acts on the rear wheels.

.The moderate wheelbase of 10 ft. 6 ins, enables the vehicle to turn in a small circle. — Walker Brothers (Wigan), Ltd., Pagefield Works. Wigan.
