A 30 m.p.h. 4-Ion Oiler. Medium and Heavy-weight Cornpression-ignition-engined Goods Vehicles

— Stand 75

A NEW range is announced,, at this Commercial Motor Show, by Fodens, Ltd. It comprises machines for loads from 4 tons to 15i tons. In the concern's products, marked improvements, . have, by • 'specialized methods, been .effected, notably in the ratios of capacity to weight.,

One model of outstanding interest is a new 4-tonner weighing, unladen, less than 50 cwt, and thus legally permitted to travel at 30 mph. On a recent test, when e full load was carried. we are informed that an average of 25.7 m.p.h. was maintained over a tolerably hilly route; 40 miles long, and that a; fuel consumption return of 30 m.p.g. was obtained. .

It is powered by the new Gardner 4LK power unit which, as an example of first-rate engineering and modern vehicle-oil-engine design demands the most careful examination.

Built of nickel steel, the frame of this 4-tanner is braced and gusseted to afford a high degree of rigidity with the minimum of weight, whilst a new radiator is a feature. This component is of the detachable-Still-tube type, and it is claimed that leakage through . chassis distortion has been eliminated.

It is incorporated in all models of the Foden range, and its artistic. design, together with the new and striking streamlined cab is most pleasing.

In the transmission, the unit-constructed gearbox is of interest, 'the teeth profiles being ground to give smooth and silent running. The pro peller shaft is...balanced and incorporates needle-bearing couplings. Final drive is by worm gear of robust design, whilst 'chrome:vanadium. steel springs ensure good suspension under all conditions.

Following the 4-tonner in general specification, the 5-6-ton model weighs under 3tons and. is also equipped with the Gardner 4LK unit. This machine is stated to have a fuel-consumption rate with full load of 25 m.p.g.

On • the 7itonner, the Gardner 4LNiV 65 b.h.p. engine is

installed. This vehicle has ., a pressed-steel frame of robust con struction and, like the others, well braced and gusseted: The tyre equipment of this vehicle is 36-in. by 8-in, pneumatics, twins at the rear. Unladen it weighs under 4 tons; with trailer it can haul 10 tons,

For use with a trailer of larger capacity, to give a '12-ton load,. the 7-tonner is also available with a five

cylindered engine. "

In the range of six-wheelers there are a 10-tonner tirith five-cylindered engine and a 12i-tonner with an engine haying six cylinders. Both are of the' single-drive type, their weights respectively being under 5 tons and under 6 tons.

With a pay-load of 15-15i tons, the largest exhibit—an eigh I-wheelerweighs under 7 tons, There are also on view a Foden 5-ton trailer, a new hydraulic pump for tipping gear shown separately, and an example of the Foden final-drive _asserably.—Fodens, Ltd., Elworth Works, Cheshire.
