Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A New Automatic Gearbox, a Six-wheeled Trolleybus Chassis, and One Goods Vehicle with an Oil Engine

Stand 76

O, special interest on this stand is an oil-engined double-deck bus chassis, equipped with the Freeborn automatic gear and flexible converter; this interesting device was fully described in the issue of The Commercial Motor dated October 25. The mechanism dispenses with all manual gear, changing, the vehicle being driven by means of the accelerator and brake pedals alone, thus minimizing fatigue when driving continuously in heavy traffic,'

The automatic gearbox is of the coicyclic type, ad ingenious feature being the inclusion of a load-control device between each set of planetary reduction gears, which governs the locking and releasing of the carrier member of the driving ratio, according to load requirements.

The chassis incorporates a Crossley six-cylindered oil engine of 9.12 litres capacity, rated at 47.9 h.p.: a feature is the Ricardo swirl chamber. Three servo brakes are provided, and the rear axle is of the underslung-worm type, with a bevel differential. The wheelbase is .16 ft. 7i ins.

Having as its basis the same type c€ chassis as• that described above, with the exception that an orthodox clutch and four-speed gearbox are fitted, a 543..seater all-metal doable-deck bus is on view, the body being of the concern's well-known all-metal construction.

A further chassis exhibit, Which vc-ilI claim attention from municipal officers, is a six-wheeled double-deck

trolleybus. The two rear axles forming the bogie are supported on a central trunnion mounted on needleroller bearings, and a thitd differential is incorporated. The forward axle is

-set with the worm shaft at an angle ta. suit the single traction motor, so that a straight-line drive is obtained when the vehicle is loaded. In addition to full regenerative control, 'Westinghouse air-pressure brakes are provided with a separate brake cylinder for each wheel, thus providing the maximum degree of compensation. A Metrdpolitan-Vickerr.; . 82. h.p. motor provides the motive power.

The electrical_ equipment . of the Crossley trolleybus includes two radio interference coils; a lightning arrester of the multi-path type and a C.A.V.Bosch 24-volt lighting set, incorporating a motongenerating plar . Another exhibit of interest is a sixwheeled aerodrome fire-tender, chassis, equipped with a mechanical Airfoam attachment. A dual-purpose type pump, capable of delivering either 400 g.p.rr. of Airfoam, or 280 g.p.m. of water, is provided. The outfit is powered by a four-cylindered engine, and a four-speed. gearbox with an auxiliary box giving a further extra low gear range is embodied.

The Crossley range of goods vehicles is represented by the Beta oilengined 7-tonner, shown with cab and drop-sided • lorry body.—Crossley Motors, Ltd., Gorton, Manchester.
