Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SINCE the rather disheartening results obtained at the Camberwell Trials we have not received particulars of many splashguard devices; but details' of one which appears to present certain points of merit have recently been sent to us by Mr. Robert Saylis, 252, Springfield Road, Belfast.

This splashguard is of the hub cap type, being pivotedOn a pin secured to the hub cap of the wheel. The portion of the guard pivoted on this pin is connected to the guard proper through the medium of another member capable of lateral movement, i.e., inward and outward. A plate spring is secured in such a way that any inward movement of the guard is resisted to a certain extent by the spring. At the back of the. spying is a projection, and fixed to the pivot pin is a projecting member which normally clears the projection on the spring whilst it revolves. When, however, the spring is forced inwards by the movement of the splashguard, the projecting member on the carrying pin

c12 comes into contact with that on the spring and causes the splashguard to be carried round with the wheel, until the guard is again forced out by the action of the spring. Thus, if the vehicle on which the guard is fitted pulls up close to the kerb, or the wheel encounters any obstruction higher ' than the road stir

face, the.splasliguard is forced in towards the wheel, is carried round clear of thr obstruction, and then comes to rest or the top of the kerb or obstruction without being sqUeezed or damaged in any way.

The guard itself consists of a light metal pressing carrying a semi-circular strip of rubber which is attached to the bottom by means of a similarly shaped metal strip and small bolts. The illustration of the guard (which we include) shows it fitted with a steel hub can strap, which can he supplied if required.

A good point, about the guard is that the bearing is completely dustproof and waterproof, and is provided with a lubricator.

The price of this splashguard is £3 12s. 6d. The design is standardized, and spare parts can be obtained, If the hub cap strap is required an extra charge of as. 3d. is made.
