Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• International hauliers took British lorries off French roads on Monday to escape the disruption caused by the latest French drivers' strike. French truckers imposed blockades on roads near Boulogne, Dunkirk, Amiens and Bordeaux—but most British hauliers weren't there to be blocked.

David Croome, managing director of Croome International, says: "Our operations staff knew of the situation on the Saturday. We were able to make arrangements so that we did not have a vehicle in France on Monday. We re-routed to Belgium."

Pat Woodward, European commercial manager of Mike Beer Transport, sent only a sin gle vehicle to France on Monday.

And Willie Cook, transport manager of Curries of Dumfries, says: "The strike did not affect us at all. All our boys left Calais early morning on the Monday as a preventative measure."

The French drivers are campaigning for better pensions and retirement at 55.
