A licence held by Stourbridge Freight Services of Bilston by the West Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. J. Else, at Birmingham on Tuesday, Mr. N. Carless, appearing for the company, said that soon after Mr. G. W. Baker, of Stafford, sold a part of his business concerned with the operation of the A-licensed vehicles to Stourbridge Freight in May. 1962, the firm got into financial trouble.

The purchase price was to be paid to Mr. Baker over a period, but because of Stourbridge Freight's financial trouble he had received nothing and was still owed £5,425. Efforts to sell the business as a going concern had failed and eventually Mr. Baker himself made an offer of 6s. 8d. in the pound, but before negotiations could be completed the L.A. took certain steps which led to the present inquiry.

Because he had so much money at stake Mr. Baker took over three of the vehicles, which continued to work for the firm's customers; the fourth was repossessed by the hire-purchase company.

Mr. Baker also applied for the renewal of two B licences covering eight vehicles, which was another part of his business. The L.A. stated that the returns from the local tax officer at Stafford showed that a number of the vehicles had been work. irig without road fund licences.
