The domestic circumstances called for some sym DUI pathy, although the offence could not he altogether orrlooked. The licences would he suspended for a period to be announced later.

At the same inquiry, two vehicles were struck off the A licence held by Mrs. M. E. Hunt, of Swansea. It was shown that of the five authorised vehicles, two had not been in possession for some time. Of the remaining three, only one was actually available for use.

Mr. Stirk on S.M.M.T. Criticism.

"Some criticism has been made by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders of certain Licensing Authorities telling applicants that they must get lorries in ' ' number of months," said Mr. J. H. Stirk, the Fast Midland Licensing Authority, at Leicester, on Tuesday. " I have never said that to 'an applicant, but I don't think it is quite playing the straight game when a licence is granted in June and the vehicle is not taken out until the following March."

Mr. Stirk made these remarks in the course of an application by Messrs. Howards Transport Services, of Leicester, for' a further vehicle to collect and deliver goods at the Leicester end of their Bristol-Leicester daily service. When a member of the firm was questioned about a 5-ton vehicle sanctioned last June, he admitted that it was not purchased until March 25 of this year. It was explained that the vehicle was sought in June for a pipe-carrying contract in connection with a local authority's scheme, which, however, had been held up until recently.

Mr. Stirk remarked that his recollection was that the vehicle was sought

in June to augment the Bristol-Leicester service, and adjourned the application, in order to read the shorthand transcript of the proceedings in Tune.
