Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The new Transit creates a good first impression thanks to lively performance, a precise gearbox and light, direct steering. It doesn't take long to get used to the Ford's controls, allowing you to settle down and enjoy the scenery. That relaxed feeling is enhanced by the well organised cab, with its practical layout and well designed storage. But after some time behind the wheel we did spot a few flaws that took the shine off the product.

That powerful engine is a little over

enthusiastic in terms of low-end torque delivery and this becomes a chore at low speeds as it picks up without warning so a gentle foot is needed on the clutch to avoid lunging forward. This would doubtless be controlled with a full load on board, but when travelling light it's irritating. Furthermore, engine noise resonates into the cabin when pushed past the 3,000rpm mark.

The unladen ride was also surprisingly firm; combined with rearwheel drive it made the Transit a touch skittish on the snowier roads though we always felt in control thanks to the standard ESP (electronic stabilisation programme).

There was also a lack of overall cabin space when compared with some of its rivals, and the lighting setup was noticeably lacking in illumination and practicality.
