When it comes to lorry bans London is in a class of its own : no other city in the UK has a comparable system.

Infringing the London lorry ban can lead to fines of up to £1,000 per offence. In the case of Exel, repeated convictions led to the curtailment of the company's activities last month, cutting the group's South Eastern licence by almost 100 trucks and 100 trailers In theory the Traffic Commissioner could even revoke a licence altogether, which is what happened to Christine Andrews of Charlton: last year she was disqualified from holding or obtaining an 0-licence for three months for 13 offences under the ban.

Many other cities enforce restrictions on city centre access or loading and unloading during the morning and evening rush hours. In Glasgow, for example, city centre loading and unloading cannot be carried out between 08:15-09:15hrs and between 16:15-17:1Shrs, and vehicles don't have access to pedestrian areas between 10:0018:00hrs. Outside the capital, however, night movements through urban areas are virtually unimpeded.
