Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Might I prevail upon your services to assist us in coming to a decision on what is to us and perhaps other hauliers a matter of long-term consequence?

We are approaching a fleet replacement programme, and have been impressed with your Northern Correspondent's report on the Spagthorpe Motor Co's new alternatively fuelled model, The Dreadnought, as recently unveiled at Gdansk (CM25-31 Jan, page 22).

Among various possible advantages this vehicle has for us is the attraction that it can be utilised during slack periods as a static unit to provide steam for glasshouse soil sterilisation purposes—a feature that has apparently escaped the sales promotion staff of SMC.

We would, however, wish to be assured on the following points before committing ourselves to a large financial outlay: Will the engine meet Euro-3 emission standards and thus be eligible for the relevant road tax refund?

What are the possibilities of it being able to meet Euro-4 standards in the future?

If so, will these standards be met when the vehicle is operated on fuel other than of Polish derivation, as supplied, possibly exclusively, by SMC?

Are the fuel and water consumption figures claimed to be achievable under normal operating conditions? ACM Scottish route road test would provide an interesting comparison—are you contemplating one?

Despite reassurance from Sir Jos Spagthorpe on the above, we would welcome your views, especially those of your Northern Correspondent, who appears to be in pole position to obtain all the inside information.

As a veteran reader of your publication of more 50 years, may I congratulate you on the excellence of both the topical and the editorial matter.

In passing, is it possible to let me have for comparison purposes a roadtest back number of the Sentinel S4 tractor?

• Northern correspondent Eric Strongltharm did indeed quiz Sir Jos on these points, only to be told: "Customers can use Dreadnought for whatever job they bloody well like—long as they've paid cash on t'nail. Euro-3? Euro-4? Nay problem, lad. I'll slip a few bob t'them Eurocrats and sort out certificates. Nay bother. Hey, that last bit's off record, young Strongithann. A'reet?"—Ed.
