A SHARP-EYED London lorry driver thwarted an armed raid in Suffolk, Ipswich Crown Court heard last week.

Within an hour of a stolen lorry being seen near the Orwell Bridge, police had been alerted and three men were arrested.

Weapons were seized, including two starting pistols, ammonia and a disguises kit, it is alleged. The Bedford lorry involved had been stolen overnight from a depot in Ilford.

By chance, a lorry driver employed at the same depot saw the stolen Bedford in a lay-by near the Orwell Bridge and he contacted the police.

The Bedford and a stolen Transit van were stopped by police on the A45 near Felixstowe. Traffic cones and signs, a sledgehammer. sandbags and clothing were found in the Transit which, with the disguises kit and weapons. could have been used in an armed robbery, the prosecution alleged.

John Best, of Loughton, Essex; Michael Croucher, of Verone Road. Bow; and Michael Linger, of Saxon Road, Bow, all deny conspiring to rob a person or persons unknown and going equipped for theft.
