THE West Gloucestershire Power Co., Ltd„ has recently put into service an all-electric demonstration van. The area served by the company is mostly rural and, although it has estahlished showrooms at strategic points, it has been found that country people do not usually make a special journey to the nearest large village or town where there is a branch. Therefore, the provision of the new van was decided upon.

The chassis is an Electricar fourwheeler with a specially short wheelbase of 10 ft. 9 ins. A 355-ampere-hour battery is mounted in two sections between the axles. The mctor is rated at 6 b.h.p., giving a road speed on the level of about 12 m.p.h.

The Exide battery is made up of 40 cells, the mileage on level roads being approximately 55 per charge. Westinghouse static-type equipment fixed inthe driver's cabin enables the batteries to be on charge while a demonstration is being given:

The interior dimensions of the demonstration body are 15 ft. by 7 ft. 2 ins. by 6 ft, 4 ins. The entrance door and steps are at the rear, on the near side, both being electrically operated by means of a button. Dual control is fitted, so that the door can be opened from inside., whilst for use in case of emergency, hand gear is also provided.

Rexine is used for interior decoration, the fittings being finished in mahogany. An electric exhauster fan is situated in the driver's cab for ventilation purposes Shadowless lighting is a feature of the demonstration room, the intensity of light being greatest towards the front, Le , nearer to the demonstration dais. • Metal-framed chairs, which may be stowed in a small space, when not in use, are provided.
