Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A keen discussion, at a meeting of the Bolton branch of the Road Haulage Association, last week, ensued when a member brought forward a list of basic rates prepared by a member of the Manchester area for the transport of goods on all types of commercial vehicle from Manchester to many centres in England and Scotland. Suggesting that these rates, with proportionate alterations, should be adopted as standard prices for the Bolton area, Mr. C. Walmsley said they covered every type of lorry from 2tonners to 12-tonners, and, so far as he could see, only the rates for 2-tonners would prove unremunerative, He said the association should tabulate rates

for different areas on the-basis of load capacity.

Mr. J. Demaine (area organizer) recommended that the secretary should secure copies of The Commercial Motor Tables of Operating Costs, which he knew were sound.

It was decided to hold a meeting on March 12 to discuss rates from the Bolton area.

An Ex-Traffic Commissioner on the Trials of Operators.

The annual dinner of the Birmingham Horse and Motor Vehicle Owners' Association was held in Birmingham a few days ago, when Mr. 0. C. Power, chairman, presided, those present including Alderman Sir Percival Bower, Alderman A. H. James, Mr. Foley Egginton, Mr. L. W. Gupwell, Mr. S. Macadam and Major Vernon Brook.

The toast of "The Association" was proposed by Alderman James, who said that, since 1930, it had concentrated on promoting the interests of individual members and of protecting them where they were likely to be threatened by legislation. He said that he did net regret having given up his post as a Traffic Commissioner, but, in occupying that position, he had gained

experience of the trials and tribulations with which road users had been confronted during the past few years.

With a view to avoiding the need for running the engines of fire appliances for short periods throughout the day and night, in order to keep them warm, the fire brigade committee of the London County Council has been experimenting with electric thermostatically controlled immersion heaters fitted to the radiator of each machine, which maintain the temperature of the water at 100 degrees F. The committee proposes that 110 heaters should be purchased at a cost of £1,235. the annual cost of maintenance being estimated at £1,100. The economy in petrol will more than cover the cost of electricity.
