He has been for 15 years in the roadtransport business, and for the past four years as Alexander's superintendent at Aberdeen.

Col. A. Jerrett. who is a 'member of the National Council of the Commercial Motor Users Association, is also chairman of the IIoylake and West Kirby Urban District Council. but he will not be seeking re-election for the latter position when his term of office expires next month, owing to pressure of busi

ness. Col. Jerrett is transport controller of Lewis's, Ltd., the well-knows

departmental store of Liverpool. •

Mr. S. G. Davies is the first native of Wales to become president of the Motor Agents Association. He is managing director of Tom Norton, Ltd., the well-known Cardiff concern dealing in commercial vehicles, having been associated with the company for 3:l years, and previously on the technical and designing side of the roadtransport industry. Mr. Davies is a past chairman of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Division of the M.A.A. and M.T.A.

In our issue dated February 22, we published a paragraph concerning the appointment of Mr. T. C. Durnan at the new London office of the Laycock Engineering Co., of Millhouses, Sheffield. We are asked to point out that Mr. Durnan is sales manager of the company's railway, tramway and coach-equipment section. The company has departmentalized its sales forces, and the sales managers in charge of other sections are Messrs. L. C. Spaven and 13. L. Oldfield.

Mr. B. P. de Putron, who received his training as an engineer apprentice in the factories of Leyland Motors, Ltd., at Leyland, Farington and Chorley, has rejoined the company and has been appointed to the sales staff

of the maker's agent for the Natal district of South Africa—Mr. J. M. Moir. After completing his course of training at Leyland, Mr. de Putron had several years' experience as an engineer with various Leyland fleet operators in the North of England. He sails for South Africa to-morrow (March 9).

Mr. II. E. Kirkby, whose portrait is reproduced on this page, controls the fleet of 1313 commercial vehicles and 70 private cars operated by the Danish Bacon Co.. Ltd., the transport organization Of which forms the subject of our centre-pages article this

week. Before the war, Mr. Kirkby was associated with Thomas Tilling, Ltd. After war service with the R.A. and R.A.F. he became transport manager to the London organization of W. and R. Jacob and Co. (Liverpool), Ltd., the biscuit concern, a position which he held until four years ago, when he took up his 'present post.

Mr. C. E. Burton, M.I.A.E., has been appointed chief designer to John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., Basingstoke, to take up which position he has relinquished the post of chief engineer he has held for many years with the Gifford Motor Co.; Ltd.

RAILWAY APPEALS WITHDRAWN

The sitting of the Appeal Tribunal, which, as announced in last week's issue, was to have been held on March 26, has been cancelled, consequent. upon the withdrawal of the appeals of the Great Western Railway Co. and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Co. against the West Midland Authority's decision to vary an licence for Southern Highways, Ltd.

The proceedings on March 27 remain unchanged, and will take place at King's Buildings, Smith Square, London, S.W.1.

Appeal in Speeding Case.

In a case turning on the question of the speed limit for a lorry and trailer, both equipped with pneumatic tyres, the Llandilo magistrates ruled that the limit for such an 'outfit was 12 m.p.h., and not 20 m.p.h., as submitted by the defence. They agreed to state a case for appeal and deferred, until the appeal decision had been given, the suspension of the driver's licence for three months. This penalty was imposed in addition to a fine of £10.

The police charged the defendant with driving at a speed of 29 m.p4.

Record Ulster Registrations.

In January, the number of commercial motors registered in Northern Ireland reached the record figure of 250, as compared with 109 in January, 1934. Ford vehicles, with a total of 90, headed the list of goods vehicles, followed by Bedford (51), MorrisCommercial (41), and Austin and Cornmer (21 each).

A Booklet on Conciliation Matters.

The decisions of the East Midland Area Joint Conciliation Board, in respect of general working conditions and wages and classifications, have been put together in the form of a handy booklet, which should prove of value to both employers and employees. The booklet is issued by the Area Board, Notts. Bank Chambers, Pelham Street, Nottingham, the joint secretary being Mr. J. H. Trease, F.S.A.A.
