Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The strong combination of the Midland Motor Cylinder Co., Ltd., and the Birmingham Aluminium Casting (1903) Co., Ltd., Dartmouth . Road, Sinethwick, Birmingham, the combined works of which cover approximately 35 acres, has been productive of several valuable alloys affecting beneficially the motor industry.

The Birmingham Aluminium Casting concern makes its alloys from virgin metal, and from 12 to 15 different specifications are regularly being handled. These include metals of the L5, LS, L11 and L24, or Y alloys, as well as silicon alloys of the Alpax type. Pour interesting alloys recently produced are Birmalite, Birmasil, Birmabright and \ Birmidium, the first and last:named of which are useful in automobile production, as well as for various other purposes.

Birmalite is essentially a hard piston alloy and, by special heat treatment, allows a Brinell hardness as high as 154, the average figure being between 130 and 150. Birmidinm has high tensile strength and is suitable for general castings where particularly heavy duty is required.

The companies' departments engaged on pressure and gravity die-casting work cover over 8,000 sq. yds., whilst the sand-casting sections have an area of approximately 10,500 sq. yds, Large quantities of air-cooled and water-cooled cylinder blocks, crankcases, gearboxes, etc., are made by these two companies.
