Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE various devices which have been produced for the laudable purpose of reducing the amount of petrol consumed by the ubiquitous Ford are too numerous io catalogue, but almost all of these suffered or suffer from the great fault of over-complication; many of them answer their purpose quite well for a time, but eventually make little or no improvement on the standard Ford system of carburation.

A device which presents many features of interest to users of Ford vehicles, and indisputably has the merit of extreme simplicity, is the M.T. petrol governor, manufactured and sold by the llotercra:ft Co., 523, Bank Chambers, High. Holborn, London, W.C.1. This accessory -can be fitted to any Ford engine -with the aninimum of time and trouble; it consists of a specially shaped exhaust-heated expansion chamber, which is placed between the ordinary Ford carburetter and induction pipe flanges, the jacket of the expansion chamber being connected to the exhaust _manifold by a flexible tube.

The illustration shows the M.T. governor in position ; it is sectioned in black for the sake of clearness. It will 'be seen that no air valve is necessary, and there-are no moving parts to wear or adjustments to get out of order.

The areas of the inlet and outlet apertures and the volume of the expansion chamber are so designed that the lighter portions of the mixture, in passing through., are deflected, slightly heated, and given a whirling motion. The heavier portions, which include any un D4

atomizsd petrol, are thrown by centrifugal force against the hottest portion of the expansion chamber, where the petrol is flashed into vapour. The resultant increase in volume decreases the partial vacuum in the expansion chamber and, consequently, reduces .the air velocity past the jet, weak-ens the mixture, and automaticallyCorrects it.

The heat imparted to the mixture is not sufficient materially to reduce the weight of charge drawn into the cylinders, but it is claimed that the increase in power ia remarkable.

The Motorcraft Co. are so confident of the good results which can be obtained with this device that they are prepared to allow a 30 days' trial, and, if their claims of petrol saving and increased engine efficiency fail, to remove it free of charge and refund the purchase price, which, incidentally, is 15s.
