EiROM last Friday, all open-cast coal is to be transported by road, because of the shortage of railway wagons and congestion at rail junctions. Since last winter a large proportion of the opencast coal output, which amounts to I I-12m. tons a year, has been distributed in this way.

As reported in "The Commercial Motor" at the time, the railway-wagon crisis which arose last winter was met by the action of hauliers in the Nottingham and Derby areas, where most of the mining takes place, who were granted emergency licences. Ordinary permits to enable the coal to be delivered beyond the 25-mile limit were issued by the Road Haulage Executive.

Meetings took place between the East Midland Area of the Road Haulage Association. the R.H.E., the National Coal Board and.the Licensing Authority. and the licences issued will now be extended for a further period. Over 50 per cent. of the work extends beyond the 25-mile limit.

Apart from the five weeks of May, road vehicles have been employed on this work since January and will now continue to carry it out exclusively.
