Death-crash driver has jail term cut on appeal

THE COURT of Appeal last week nearly halved the jail sentence of a truck driver convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.
James Kelly was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in February by Bristol Crown Court: his term has now been cut to two years.
At his trial Kelly admitted ploughing into the back of a stationary ambulance on the hard shoulder of the M4, killing a man beingtreated inside (CM5 February).
The court heard that just before the accident witnesses saw his truck drifting across the two inside lanes and the hard shoulder. The prosecution said that the "overwhelming likelihoodwas that Kelly had fallen asleep.
At the appeal Kelly, from Pontypool, was given credit for pleading guilty at the original trial and for showing remorse.
