Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The East Kent Road Car Co. Ltd, whose buses operate from Faversham to Rye and between Ashford and the holiday coast towns, is a4ing the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners to approve new fare increases from February 21. If agreed, the adult 5d (24) fares for journeys of half a mile or more—which were not increased in July and all other adult fares, will go up 2d (1p). The present 5d fares for trips of less than half a mile will remain unchanged. But a new concession is proposed for travellers between 9.15 am and 3.45 pm from Mondays to Fridays. All fares of 7d (3p) or more would be reduced by 2d (1p) during those six hours.

As an experiment Wanderbus Tickets, by which passengers can buy unlimited travel on a variety of buses on Sundays and Bank Holidays, would be extended to Saturdays enabling shoppers to travel out of their home towns at an "all-in" rate if they wished. New fares for this facility would be 10s (50p) for adults and 5s (25p) for children. Mr John Bodger, traffic manager, said: "In framing these proposals we have tried to encourage people to travel at less busy times on the five busiest days of the week."

The company, which announced last month an operating loss for the first time in its 54-year history, stressed that the fares increases proposed were not due to decimalization.

The company's application is due to be considered by the Traffic Commissioners on February 4 and 5.
