• Gourock Town Council, Renfrewshire, has decided to look into the possibility of setting up a municipal bus service. They will also object to an application by the Western SMTC to raise fares.
Provost Robert Williamson said the council was very perturbed about possible increases. Despite protests in the past the council had failed to impress the Traffic Commissioners. The town clerk had now been asked to inquire into the possibility of starting a municipal bus service, although not much hope was entertained of such a service being permitted.
"One would hope that the increase in bus fares, which takes place so regularly, might be brought to the notice of the Monopolies Commission and that something might be done to help us in the protest we are now making," he added.
Bailie Stewart Airth said he hoped serious consideration would be given to the idea of a municipal bus service "as this is our only hope for the future". But Cllr George Davidson said such a service would be a crippling cost on the rates. He understood that Bailie Airth had suggested it should be a free bus service.
