Who's who in the industry

• Just published is the 1970 /71 edition of Who's Who in the Motor and Commercial Vehicle Industries. This annual directory, published in association with Commercial Motor and Motor, is a comprehensive guide to the companies in the automotive manufacturing field, and includes makers of accessories, engines, components and bodybuilders as well as chassis and trailer manufacturers.

Overseas sections of the British motor industry are included, and UK importers of foreign vehicles.

A large part of the 496-page hard-cover volume is devoted to details of the organizations and associations connected with vehicles and road transport, and with biographies of many •of the prominent people in the automotive world. There is also a lit of publications covering road transport and motoring.

This work is recognized as an authoritative guide to the industry and its use for quick reference is aided by a very clear index. Who's Who costs 50s from booksellers or 54s including postage from the publishers, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Neville House, Eden St, Kingston-onThames, Surrey (tel: 01-546 1722).

Freight industry yearbook

• A new edition of the very useful Freight Industry Yearbook for 1971 has been published by Ian Allan Ltd, Terminal House, Shepperton, Middx. It contains many amendments to previous editions which reflect the changes that have taken place regarding operators' supplies and the many other businesses concerned in the movement of freight. The summary of legal requirements has been revised and indexed, and it includes the C and U Regulations, hgv driving licences and drivers' hours and records and 0-licensing rules.

Among the most useful items in the book are the lists of vehicle manufacturers and bodybuilders, emergency breakdown services (which is a new section), the names and addresses of transport organizations, warehousing and forwarding agents, and comprehensive lists of haulage and own-account operators. Continental operating, container leasing facilities and lists of air freight agents also feature among the 274 pages.

The book is sturdily bound and the contents on its 1 lfin. by 8-1-in. pages are well laid out for ease of reference. It is priced at £5 5s. Postage and packing is 4s 6d. D.L.

Metric tables

• Vehicle Metrics is a pocket booklet of conversion tables produced specifically for people whose work concerns vehicles. Some tables included are not standards because conversion factors have been simplified. Tables for centimetres are included because they are commonly used in European vehicle specifications. The aim has been to provide practical, quick reference equivalents sufficiently accurate—to three places of decimals—for most needs in the period of change to metrication.

Textbooks for Mechanics

• , Recent new editions of two textbooks outlining the simple basic calculations required in a study of automobile engineering by automobile apprentices and garage mechanics and, in a second part, the application of more advanced data to the problems of service engineers and so on, represent a realistic approach to selecting the kind of information that is most frequently needed by technicians in these categories.

Following closely on the publication of the third edition of Part 1 of Motor Vehicle Calculations and Science the third edition of part 2 of this book is now available from

Edward Arnold (Publishers) Ltd, Woodlands Park Ave, Woodlands Park, Maidenhead, Berks. Part 1 costs 15s., while the cost of Part 2 is 24s.

R. C. Champion, head of the engineering trades department of Paddington Technical College, and E. C. Arnold, former course tutor, automobile engineering, Southgate Technical College, are the authors of both parts. Data is given in SI (decimal) units.

The books should also be valuable to senior engineers whose knowledge of some basic scientific phenomena has "got a bit rusty", notably with regard to such subjects as friction properties, materials, bearing loads, power transmission, balancing, fuel characteristics, engine testing and the forces acting on a vehicle, not to mention the mathematics involved. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter and there are many worked examples. P.B.
