Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The north western haulage and warehousing company, whose vehicles were "blacked" at Liverpool docks after talks on a new pay structure broke down, is likely to reach an agreement with officials of the TGWU in the • next few days which will lead to a full settlement of the dispute now in its fourth month.

Talks between union leaders and representatives of the firm, H. Nuttall and Sons Ltd, of Heywood. Lanes, followed the publication in CM on December 25 of the difficulties encountered by the company in solving the dispute which it claimed had cost many of its employees hundreds of pounds in lost earnings through a ban on deliveries at Liverpool-docks.

The firm claimed that the trouble, which it said could easily have been settled with a new wage structure favourable to the men, led instead to a farcical situation in which it was forced to close down its Liverpool subsidiary, trading under its pre-acquisition name of C. and W. H. Taylor Ltd. Later, when other hauliers at the firm's request took over this business from Taylor's customers, the union blacked this traffic as well as that of Nuttall vehicles in the docks.

After exploratory talks this week both sides agreed that a settlement was now within reach and could well be finalized by today (Friday). This, CM understands, would include a lifting of the blacking at the docks both for hauliers handling business for former customers of the firm and for Nuttall vehicles as well.
