was the reason given by A. L. S. Harman Ltd., of Wolverhampton, for applying at Birmingham last week to switch six contract vehicles to men A licence. The application was granted by the West Midland deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. R. Hall, with a normal user for these six plus three already on open A of: Goods for the Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. (Gt. Britain) and Kelly Springfield Tyre Co. Ltd. The grant did not involve any increase in the fleet.
Mr. Norman Carless, presenting the application, said that Harman's A fleet consisted of five vehicles, including four artics, on contract to Goodyear, one on contract to Kelly Springfield and three on open A.
Because of the heavily increasing amount of traffic the company was being called on to carry for the two tyre manufacturers, the normal user had become outdated. Mr. Harman was being obliged to put all his eggs in two baskets because of the importance of the tyre traffic. However, if a new licence were granted and had it a market value, said Mr. Carless, it would be worth considerably less than the existing licences because of its restricted nature. The company was doing a considerable amount of subcontracting and would continue to do so.
