OFFICIAL hopes had been expressed that the Government Scheme for long-distance haulage would start on January 1, but financial difficulties have had to be overeome, and a committee consisting of Sir H. Howitt, Sir A. R. Smith, and Mr. R. E. Yeabsley, all eminent accountants, has been investigating the position of the net-profit basis, and their report is now being considered. In the meantime, other work. involved in-the reorganisation is proceeding. Meetings of potential unit controllers have also taken place.

In connection with this, all concerns who have been interviewed and invitedby the M. of W.T. to discuss the formation of the units met on December 29, in London, when it was unanimously resolved to give full support to the Government Scheme as outlined. subject to satisfactory financial arrangements being made, so that road haulage may continue to play its part in the national effort and, at the same time,

conserve those two essential commodities, rubber and fuel. The following were present:— '
