FOLLOWING TESCO'S purchase of Modec electric vehicles, Marks & Spencer is trialling a 7.5-tonner from Smith Electric Vehicles, owned by the Tanfield Group — best known for producing electric milk floats.

The vehicle, named Smith Newton,is restricted to 50mph and covers about 120 miles between battery changes. It handles payloads up to 4,000kg depending on battery configuration and body type.

The Newton's electric motor produces 161hp: it is powered by sodium-nickel-chloride batteries charged from the mains.
