Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"Structural simplification" of Somerfield's supply chain could lead to more than 500 redundancies, including 200 driver jobs. David Harris reports.

WINCANTON PLANS to shut two depots, threatening 200 drivers jobs, in a restructuring of its Somerfield operations in Rosson-Wye and Tewkesbury Unions say that when warehouse workers and other staff are included the closure could lead to more than 500 redundancies.

The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw), which represents more than 2(X) of the staff, and the T&G, which represents many of the drivers, were due to meet Wincanton this week. Usdaw area organiser Tracey MacGregor says: "This is devastating news for our members at both sites so we will be making sure they get our full support during what will be a very worrying time for them."

She adds that one of the purposes of talks with the company will be to see if affected staff will be offered jobs at otherWinumton sites:"This is an outstanding workforce and we'll be working with our team of representatives and the company to explore all the options. A Wincanton spokesman says the move is part of a "structural simplification" of the Somerfield business:"Wincanton has entered into a 90-day consultation period with all employees at these locations and the recognised trade unions. The proposal for these closures is not a reflection of the performance of the sites and staff, but is a consequence of the strategic review of Some rfield's supply chain."

The Ross-on-Wye operation is an ambient depot while Tewkesbury specialises in chilled goods.
