n American motorist found guilty of a minor offence has been ordered to cast his mind to higher things — the judge sentenced him to attend church. At the hearing in SaddlebroA, New Jersey Raymond Bachelor, 30, was ordered to worship regularly after his car deliberately nudged the car of a woman in front who was searching for change at a toll booth. Judge Nicholas Nasarenko, of the Russian Orthodox faith, told Bachelor: "Your minister is going to find out who you are. You're going to be a regular visitor." The sentence has been attacked by the American Civil Liberties Union, which believes religious leaders will be slighted to think that church is an alternative to jail. Meanwhile, future defendants must wonder what lies in store for them. In another case, the eccentric beak ordered a man to cut off his ponytail as a condition to dropping an assault charge. Michael Howard take note.
