Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE DRIVING Standards Agency has just published the proposed arrangements for the implementation of the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for professional lorry drivers. It could well be the end of the transport industry in the UK.

There are two options available: Option I consists of 280 hours of training (a total of eight weeks), including a minimum of 20 hours driving.

Option 2 consists of a four-hour theoretical test and a two-hour driving test plus the training required to meet the test standards.

The theoretical test would 'contain multiple choice questions, hazard-perception questions and case studies. The syllabus is similar to the CPC for transport managers.

I'm all in favour of improving the standard of driver training, but who is going to pay for it?

The DSA estimates the cost will be in the region of D5m a year. There will also be periodic training of at least 35 hours every five years.

The proposals can be downloaded from the DfT website (www.dft.gov.uk) where you can make your views known.
