Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A TC suggests that driver training on hours and tachos should cut your premiums. Mike Jewell reports.

A TRAFFIC Commissioner is considering contacting insurance firms to see if extra training for drivers on hours and tacho rules would lead to lower premiums. The comments from North-Western TC Beverley Bell came during a public inquiry into K&P Iddon.

The Leyland firm, which holds a licence for 60 vehicles and 70 trailers, had been called before the TC because of concerns over prohibitions; the illegal use of a vehicle in Scotland for eight years; and hours and tacho offences. Philip Iddon said he had assumed the companv-s drivers knew the rules; Bell remarked that this was typical of an industry that had failed to train drivers.

Vehicle examiner Anthony Hicks said he had checked four vehicles and four trailers at the end of August and found them to be in a satisfactory condition.

The paperwork seemed to be in order, hut when he spoke to the drivers they did not seem to understand what was required in coupling and uncoupling trailers and daily walk-round checks.

Asked about hours and tachograph convictions, Philip Iddon said they had now brought in consultants to train the drivers.

Fellow director Keith Iddon said he thought they had been a victim of their own success, but admitted they needed to get their act together.

The TC adjourned the proceedings until March to give K&P Iddon time to demonstrate its compliance with the regs. She felt the company was honest but had been extremely negligent.
